The Pakistan Air Force (PAF) recently observed the seventh anniversary of Operation Swift Retort with a solemn ceremony held at Air Headquarters in Rawalpindi. This commemoration served not only as a remembrance of a pivotal moment in Pakistan’s military history but also as a reaffirmation of the PAF’s unwavering dedication to peace, national sovereignty, and continuous modernization. The event underscored the Air Force’s evolution in both strategic capabilities and technological advancements over the past several years.
During the ceremony, Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Baber Sidhu, the Chief of the Air Staff, delivered a powerful address emphasizing Pakistan’s stance as a responsible nation that seeks peace without compromising its dignity. He recalled the events of seven years ago when Pakistan’s sovereignty was challenged under the cover of darkness by an aggressor who underestimated the country’s resolve and military strength. The PAF’s swift and measured response in broad daylight not only restored deterrence but also sent a clear message about Pakistan’s capability to defend its airspace against a numerically superior foe.
The Air Chief further elaborated on the complex and rapidly changing global and regional security landscape, highlighting how modern warfare has evolved to encompass multiple domains beyond traditional air combat. Since March 2021, despite facing financial constraints, the PAF has embarked on an ambitious path of comprehensive modernization and indigenization. This transformation aims to develop a Next Generation Air Force equipped with cutting-edge technologies and enhanced operational doctrines tailored to contemporary threats.
Significant strides have been made in integrating advanced combat systems, including the induction of indigenously developed unmanned aerial systems, sophisticated electronic warfare capabilities, and assets in space and cyber domains. These developments have culminated in the establishment of a unique, home-grown multi-domain Kill Chain, which enhances the PAF’s ability to conduct coordinated and precise operations across various theaters of conflict.
Looking ahead, the Air Chief referenced the recent Marka-e-Haq operation in May 2025, which marked a historic milestone for the PAF. For the first time, Pakistan’s air force executed full-spectrum multi-domain operations with remarkable precision, decisively overwhelming the adversary. This operation demonstrated the PAF’s enhanced capabilities through the successful downing of advanced enemy aircraft such as Rafale, SU-30 MKI, Mirage-2000, and MiG-29 fighters, along with multiple unmanned aerial systems. Additionally, the PAF carried out deep strikes within hostile territory and neutralized sophisticated S-400 air defense systems, including their command and control centers, showcasing a significant leap in operational effectiveness.
Reaffirming the Air Force’s commitment to safeguarding Pakistan’s sovereignty, Air Chief Marshal Sidhu stated that the PAF will continue to serve as a symbol of national pride and resilience. The force remains dedicated to maintaining credible deterrence and upholding a vigilant yet responsible defense posture, ensuring that Pakistan is prepared to face any future challenges with professionalism and strength.
