Scream 7 Premiere Marred by Pro-Palestine Demonstrations Amid Controversy

The much-anticipated premiere of Scream 7 at Paramount Studios on the evening of February 26, 2026, was overshadowed by a significant protest that brought political tensions to the forefront of Hollywood’s horror franchise event. A group of around 25 to 30 demonstrators gathered outside the studio lot, voicing their dissent against the film and demanding a boycott. These protesters, affiliated with organizations such as Entertainment Labor for Palestine, CODEPINK LA, and Jewish Voice for Peace-Los Angeles, made their presence felt by waving Palestinian flags and chanting slogans that echoed their call for justice and solidarity.

The protest was rooted in the controversial dismissal of actress Melissa Barrera from the Scream 7 cast in November 2023. Barrera’s termination came after she publicly expressed support for Palestine on social media following the Hamas invasion of Israel in October 2023. Spyglass Media Group, the production company behind the film, justified their decision by emphasizing a strict policy against antisemitism and any form of hate speech. This move sparked outrage among activists who view it as an attempt to silence pro-Palestinian voices within the entertainment industry.

Carrying placards with messages such as “Cancel Paramount+” and “Stand For Free Speech Boycott Scream 7,” the protesters accused Hollywood of engaging in censorship and whitewashing the ongoing conflict in Gaza. They argued that the industry is complicit in suppressing narratives that challenge mainstream perspectives on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Nino Testa, one of the protest organizers, expressed deep concern over what they perceive as a racist blacklisting of artists who advocate for Palestinian rights, underscoring their commitment to defending freedom of expression within the creative community.

Meanwhile, the fallout from Barrera’s firing has had a profound impact on the production of Scream 7 itself. Following her departure, co-star Jenna Ortega also exited the project, and original director Christopher Landon stepped down months later. These developments forced the cancellation of a planned trilogy that would have centered on the characters portrayed by Barrera and Ortega. To salvage the sequel, Kevin Williamson, a veteran of the franchise, was brought in to direct and reimagine the storyline. The revamped film now features the return of franchise icons Neve Campbell and Courteney Cox, with filming having resumed in January 2025.

Director Williamson addressed the protests with a balanced perspective, acknowledging the right to peaceful demonstration in America. He shared that witnessing the protest stirred a strong emotional response but affirmed his support for the protesters’ right to voice their opinions. Williamson’s comments highlight the complex intersection of art, politics, and free speech that the controversy has ignited within the entertainment world.

Despite the vocal demonstrations, the premiere proceeded as planned, with the film’s stars walking the red carpet and engaging with fans and media. The sounds of drums and trumpets from the protesters could be faintly heard in the background, serving as a persistent reminder of the ongoing dispute. Scream 7 is set to be released in theaters on February 27, 2026, amid heightened attention not only for its cinematic content but also for the broader political and social issues surrounding its production.

As of now, neither Paramount Pictures nor Spyglass Media Group has publicly commented on the protests or the controversy surrounding the film’s casting decisions. The situation continues to fuel debate about the role of political expression in Hollywood and the responsibilities of media companies in navigating such sensitive topics.
