Marc Marquez Ranks Sixth in Opening Thailand MotoGP Practice Session

As the 2024 MotoGP season officially kicked off in Buriram, Thailand, reigning world champion Marc Marquez posted the sixth-fastest time during Friday’s opening free practice session. While the Spaniard was unable to match the pace of the session leader, Marco Bezzecchi, Marquez’s performance set the stage for his pursuit of an unprecedented eighth world championship title this weekend.

Last season, Marquez dominated much of the competition before a shoulder injury sidelined him for the final four races, impacting his ability to close out the campaign. This lingering physical setback continues to affect his riding, compelling him to adapt his style on the bike as he works toward regaining full strength and confidence. Despite these challenges, Marquez remains determined to defend his crown and add to his already impressive legacy in the sport.

During the dry and clear conditions of the first practice, Bezzecchi, riding for Aprilia, set the benchmark with a fastest lap time of 1 minute 29.346 seconds. The Italian rider led the pack by a margin of 0.426 seconds over Marquez, who was clearly pushing to find his rhythm early in the weekend. Just behind Bezzecchi was Fabio Di Giannantonio of the VR46 team, who secured second place on the timesheets, trailing by 0.110 seconds.

The session also featured strong performances from other top contenders, including Aprilia’s Jorge Martin, the reigning 2024 world champion, who clocked the third-best time. Martin, however, experienced a setback when he crashed approximately ten minutes into the session, a reminder of the fine margins and risks involved in MotoGP racing. Following Martin were Trackhouse’s Ai Ogura and KTM’s Pedro Acosta, both showing promising pace as the competition heats up.

Francesco Bagnaia, who claimed the world championship titles in 2022 and 2023, finished the session in seventh place, just behind his Ducati teammate Marquez. Meanwhile, Alex Marquez, who finished as the championship runner-up last season, secured ninth place, indicating a competitive field among the top riders. Notably, Turkey’s Toprak Razgatlioglu, a three-time Superbike world champion making his MotoGP debut, completed the session in 21st position, gaining valuable experience in the premier class.

As the weekend progresses, all eyes will be on Marquez to see how he manages his recovery while competing against a field full of talented riders eager to challenge his dominance. The Thailand Grand Prix promises to be an exciting start to the new season, with riders and teams fine-tuning their setups and strategies in pursuit of victory.
