    Government Initiates Talks on Austerity Amid Rising Iran-US Tensions

    The federal government of Pakistan has initiated discussions on implementing a series of austerity measures in response to escalating tensions between Iran and the United States. Officials are evaluating strategies aimed at curbing energy consumption and alleviating strain on the country’s resources.

    These potential measures could be activated if regional hostilities intensify, prompting a reinstatement of administrative restrictions previously employed during times of economic and energy crises. Among the proposals under review is the introduction of a three-day weekend for government offices to reduce operational costs.

    Additionally, authorities are considering permitting half of government employees to work remotely, which would further decrease energy usage in public sector workplaces. Plans to limit the number of official vehicles and cut petrol and diesel consumption across government departments are also part of the broader cost-saving initiatives being examined.

    Discussions are underway regarding the possibility of restricting the operating hours of markets and commercial centers to conserve energy resources. Final decisions on these proposals are expected within the coming days, although no official announcements have been made so far.

    Before any major austerity measures are implemented, the federal government intends to consult with provincial administrations to ensure a unified and coordinated approach nationwide. These deliberations arise amid concerns that worsening Iran-US relations could negatively impact Pakistan’s economy, particularly its energy sector.

    While officials have yet to confirm whether these austerity steps will be enforced or specify the conditions under which they might be triggered, the government remains vigilant in preparing for potential economic repercussions stemming from the regional tensions.
