Government Raises Petrol and Diesel Prices After Failed Negotiations

The federal government announced a significant increase in petroleum prices on Tuesday, effective from July 22. This adjustment comes after unsuccessful negotiations with fuel pump owners, prompting the authorities to revise the rates of petrol and high-speed diesel (HSD) upwards for the upcoming fortnight.

the official notification, the price of petrol has been raised by Rs4.83 per litre, setting the new rate at Rs320.73 per litre. Similarly, the cost of high-speed diesel has surged by Rs7.15 per litre, reaching Rs367 per litre. These revised prices will remain in effect until the next scheduled review, unless the government decides to alter them sooner.

Notably, this price hike follows a recent adjustment made just a day earlier, when petrol prices were marginally reduced by Rs0.35 per litre to Rs315.80, while diesel prices were increased by Rs5.71 per litre to Rs360.6. The government conducts daily reviews of petroleum prices, taking into account fluctuations in international oil markets, currency exchange rates, and recommendations from relevant regulatory bodies.

In a significant development, the failure of talks with fuel pump owners has led to this sharp increase, reflecting the ongoing challenges in balancing domestic fuel pricing with global market dynamics. The government’s decision underscores the complexities involved in managing energy costs amid volatile international conditions and local economic pressures.
