US-Iran Nuclear Talks End Without Agreement but Show Signs of Progress

Diplomatic efforts between the United States and Iran over Tehran’s contentious nuclear program saw some advancement on Thursday, as revealed by Omani officials who acted as mediators during the talks. Despite hours of intense negotiations in Switzerland, the discussions concluded without a definitive breakthrough, leaving the possibility of US military action looming amid a significant buildup of American forces in the region. The two parties agreed to reconvene after consulting with their respective governments, with technical-level meetings scheduled to take place next week in Vienna, Omani Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr Albusaidi.

The ongoing dialogue represents one of the most serious attempts in recent years to resolve the long-standing nuclear dispute between the two adversaries. Any meaningful progress toward a comprehensive agreement could potentially defuse the escalating tensions and reduce the likelihood of a US-led strike, which many analysts fear could ignite a broader conflict in the Middle East. However, the absence of a concrete deal at this stage means the region remains on edge, with uncertainty hanging over the future of diplomatic relations.

Thursday’s indirect talks involved Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi and US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, who held two sessions in Geneva—one in the morning and another in the afternoon. Following the meetings, Badr Albusaidi expressed cautious optimism, stating that significant progress had been made during the negotiations. Nonetheless, he refrained from providing specific details or confirming whether the most challenging obstacles had been overcome, highlighting the complexity of the issues at hand.

Iranian Foreign Minister Araqchi described the discussions as some of the most serious engagements Iran has had with the United States in recent memory. He acknowledged that while agreements were reached on certain points, differences persisted on others. Araqchi also emphasized that the next round of talks would occur soon, within less than a week. He reiterated Iran’s firm demand for the lifting of US sanctions, a condition Washington has consistently linked to Tehran making substantial concessions.

The US negotiating team remained silent on the immediate outcomes of the talks, though a senior American official characterized the Geneva meetings as “positive.” These negotiations come amid growing fears of a potential conflagration in the Middle East, as the Trump administration has repeatedly warned of military action should diplomacy fail. The US has simultaneously increased its military presence near Iran, deploying fighter jets and aircraft carrier strike groups to the region as a show of force.

Earlier on Thursday, a senior Iranian official suggested that a framework for a deal might be achievable if Washington agreed to separate nuclear issues from other contentious topics. However, the Trump administration insists that Iran’s ballistic missile program and its support for armed groups across the Middle East must be integral parts of any negotiation. This stance remains a significant sticking point, as Iran maintains that its missile program is purely defensive and refuses to discuss it in the current talks.

During the sessions, Oman’s Foreign Minister noted that the two sides exchanged “creative and positive ideas,” signaling a willingness to explore new avenues for compromise. Yet, Iranian officials acknowledged that substantial gaps still needed to be bridged before a final agreement could be reached. The core dispute revolves around Iran’s uranium enrichment activities, which Washington views as a pathway to nuclear weapons capability, while Tehran insists its program is solely for peaceful purposes.

In recent days, reports have emerged that Tehran is prepared to offer unspecified new concessions in exchange for the removal of sanctions and formal recognition of its right to enrich uranium. However, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has highlighted Iran’s refusal to address its ballistic missile program as a major obstacle that must eventually be resolved. Rubio described the missiles as designed to target America and destabilize the region, though he did not provide concrete evidence supporting claims that US territory is at risk.

President Donald Trump has set a tight deadline for a deal, warning on February 19 that Iran must reach an agreement within 10 to 15 days or face “really bad things.” In his recent State of the Union address, Trump underscored his preference for a diplomatic solution but made it clear he would not tolerate Iran acquiring nuclear weapons. The US has intensified pressure on Tehran since last summer, when it joined Israel in striking Iranian nuclear sites, and again following Iran’s harsh crackdown on nationwide protests earlier this year.

Iran has responded to these provocations with missile attacks on Israel and stern warnings of severe retaliation if attacked again, raising fears of a wider regional war that could disrupt global oil supplies. Inside Iran, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei confronts the most serious crisis of his 36-year rule, with the economy suffering under tightened sanctions and renewed unrest following the January protests. President Masoud Pezeshkian recently reaffirmed Khamenei’s religious decree banning weapons of mass destruction, signaling Tehran’s official stance against developing nuclear arms.
