Punjab Government Boosts Security Measures on CM Maryam Nawaz’s Directive Amid Rising Threats

In response to escalating security concerns and recent terror-related incidents in the region, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has taken decisive action by directing a comprehensive enhancement of security arrangements throughout the province. This move aims to safeguard the public and maintain law and order amid a challenging national security landscape.

To oversee the implementation of these measures, a high-level security meeting was convened under the leadership of Inspector General of Police (IGP) Abdul Kareem. During this critical session, officials thoroughly evaluated the current security framework and outlined stringent steps to fortify protection at various vulnerable points across Punjab. The urgency of the situation was underscored by recent terrorist activities originating from a neighboring country, which have heightened the risk perception within the province.

IGP Abdul Kareem emphasized the necessity of intensified security protocols at key locations, including mosques, imambargahs, shrines, and other religious sites that attract large gatherings. Markets and sensitive installations have also been identified as priority areas requiring increased vigilance. Special focus was placed on protecting foreign nationals, particularly Chinese citizens and Sikh pilgrims, who frequently visit the province for religious and business purposes. Ensuring their safety is considered vital to maintaining Punjab’s reputation as a secure destination for international visitors.

In addition to these measures, law enforcement personnel stationed at inter-provincial border checkpoints and other critical points have been instructed to maintain heightened alertness at all times. Coordination among various agencies—including district officials, the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD), Special Branch, and intelligence units—has been mandated to guarantee seamless execution of security protocols. This collaborative approach is designed to close any gaps that could be exploited by hostile elements.

The meeting also addressed recent drone-related terrorist threats, prompting the strict enforcement of government-imposed restrictions under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure. Supervisory officers were tasked with briefing frontline security staff about the current threat levels and ensuring that all checkpoints and sensitive locations remain secure. Particular attention was drawn to the safety of women in public spaces such as bazaars and markets, with the deployment of female police personnel to enhance protection and encourage community trust.

Furthermore, security forces have been directed to conduct intensified intelligence-driven operations, including search, sweep, and combing activities, to identify and neutralize potential threats. This includes rigorous verification of travelers and hotel guests arriving from other cities, as well as close monitoring of suspicious vehicles, rickshaws, and cargo at city entry and exit points. These proactive measures are intended to prevent any untoward incidents and maintain public confidence in the province’s security apparatus.

The meeting was attended by senior police officials, including Additional IG Operations, Additional IG Special Branch, DIG Traffic, AIG Operations, and AIG Development. Other key figures such as Additional IG CTD, CCPO Lahore, Additional IG South Punjab, Additional IG CCD, Regional Police Officers (RPOs), City Police Officers (CPOs), and District Police Officers (DPOs) participated through video conferencing, reflecting a coordinated and province-wide commitment to enhancing security.

These comprehensive security enhancements demonstrate the Punjab government’s proactive stance in addressing emerging threats and its commitment to protecting citizens, religious minorities, and foreign visitors alike. As the situation continues to evolve, authorities remain vigilant and prepared to adapt their strategies to ensure the safety and stability of the province.
