American newcomer Jackson Suber surged to the front of the leaderboard at the British Open on Thursday, delivering an impressive five-under-par 65 at Royal Birkdale. His performance included six birdies and a remarkable eagle on the par-five 17th hole, setting him apart early in the tournament.
Earlier, England’s Dan Brown and South Korea’s Im Sung-jae had briefly shared the lead after each carded opening rounds of 66. However, Suber’s strong finish propelled him ahead of the field, making him only the fourth player to shoot 65 or better on their Open debut. Reflecting on his experience, Suber noted, “This was only my fifth day ever in Europe, so I’m definitely learning the links course.”
Defending champion Scottie Scheffler, seeking to become the first player since Padraig Harrington in 2008 to win consecutive Open titles, posted a solid two-under 68. Meanwhile, Bryson DeChambeau recorded a three-under 67, marking a strong start after missing the cut in the first three majors of the year.
DeChambeau was part of a group tied at three under alongside Belgium’s Thomas Detry, Scotland’s Robert MacIntyre, Italy’s Francesco Molinari, and American Alex Smalley. Home favorite Tommy Fleetwood opened with a one-under 69, while former champion Justin Rose struggled, finishing with a 75.
The course conditions at Royal Birkdale have been notably dry, resulting in faster fairways compared to the rain-soaked 2017 Open. This change in conditions has influenced scoring and strategy as players adapt to the quicker terrain.
