In a commanding display of cricketing prowess, South Africa overwhelmed the West Indies by nine wickets during a crucial Super Eight encounter of the T20 World Cup 2026 held at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Thursday. The Proteas showcased their all-round strength, delivering a comprehensive performance that left their opponents struggling to keep pace throughout the match.

West Indies were put into bat first after losing the toss, and despite a challenging start marked by the early loss of wickets, they managed to post a competitive total of 176 runs for the loss of eight wickets in their allotted 20 overs. The innings was notably bolstered by a remarkable partnership between Jason Holder and Romario Shepherd. This duo came together under pressure and forged an impressive 89-run stand for the eighth wicket, setting a new record for the highest partnership for that wicket in West Indies’ T20 International history.

Jason Holder emerged as the top scorer for the Caribbean side, contributing a gritty 49 runs before his innings was cut short by a run out in the final over. Meanwhile, Romario Shepherd remained unbeaten on 52, marking a significant milestone as his maiden half-century in T20 Internationals. Their resilient partnership was the backbone of the West Indies’ innings, helping them reach a respectable total despite the early setbacks.

South Africa’s bowling attack was spearheaded by Lungi Ngidi, who delivered a highly effective spell, claiming three crucial wickets to derail the West Indies’ momentum. He received valuable support from Kagiso Rabada and Corbin Bosch, both of whom chipped in with two wickets apiece, ensuring that the opposition never gained a foothold in the match.

When it was South Africa’s turn to bat, they approached the chase with confidence and precision. The captain, Aiden Markram, played a pivotal role by anchoring the innings with a well-crafted 82 runs. His composed and calculated batting laid a solid foundation for the chase. Rassie van der Dussen complemented Markram’s efforts by remaining unbeaten on 45, guiding the team steadily towards the target. Opener David Dekker also made a valuable contribution with 47 runs before being dismissed, but the target of 177 was comfortably achieved with just one wicket lost.

This victory not only kept South Africa unbeaten in the Super Eight stage but also significantly enhanced their prospects of securing a place in the semi-finals. Their dominant performance at the Narendra Modi Stadium sent a strong message to other contenders in the tournament, highlighting their balanced team composition and ability to perform under pressure. As the tournament progresses, the Proteas will look to maintain this momentum and continue their pursuit of the coveted T20 World Cup title.
