Lahore traffic authorities have introduced a fleet of drones powered by artificial intelligence to address the city’s persistent traffic congestion and seasonal smog in real time. This initiative represents a major technological advancement for Pakistan’s second-largest city, shifting from traditional stationary CCTV systems and manual traffic wardens to dynamic aerial surveillance.
These advanced drones, equipped with thermal imaging and high-definition cameras, patrol Lahore’s busiest arterial roads and notorious traffic choke points to identify the root causes of gridlock. Instead of merely collecting data, the captured footage is processed through specialized AI software developed specifically for the Lahore Traffic Police.
The AI algorithms analyze traffic disruptions autonomously, detect illegal bottlenecks, and recommend data-driven solutions for engineering improvements or enforcement actions. Chief Traffic Officer Syed Abdul Raheem Shirazi explained during a live demonstration that drones are dispatched immediately upon reports of congestion to assess causes and provide real-time intelligence.
The system aims to enhance long-term urban traffic planning and improve daily commuter flow. Additionally, the drones serve as an enforcement tool targeting common violations such as smoke-emitting vehicles that worsen Lahore’s severe winter air pollution, one-way driving infractions, illegal roadside parking, and commercial encroachments that reduce lane availability.
The CTO emphasized that this technology bridges enforcement with urban planning. When data indicates that poor intersection design, rather than driver behavior, causes bottlenecks, the video evidence is securely shared with relevant development authorities to facilitate infrastructure modifications.
