KP Cabinet Endorses Health Policy 2026, Broadens Sehat Card OPD Coverage

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) cabinet has formally approved the Health Policy 2026, marking a significant step towards improving healthcare delivery in the province. This policy aims to strengthen the health sector by introducing comprehensive reforms and expanding access to medical services for residents. A key feature of the policy is the broadening of the Sehat Card program, which now includes an extended scope for outpatient department (OPD) services. This expansion is expected to facilitate greater utilization of healthcare facilities by enabling more patients to receive treatment without financial barriers.

Notably, the Sehat Card initiative has been a cornerstone of KP’s efforts to provide universal health coverage, offering free medical treatment to eligible citizens. By increasing the OPD coverage, the government intends to reduce the burden on inpatient services and promote early diagnosis and treatment of illnesses. This move aligns with global health trends emphasizing preventive care and outpatient management to improve overall population health. The policy also envisions upgrading healthcare infrastructure and enhancing the quality of services across the province.

In a significant development, the Health Policy 2026 is expected to contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals related to health and well-being by 2030. Expanding the Sehat Card’s OPD scope will likely improve health outcomes and reduce out-of-pocket expenses for many families in KP. The cabinet’s approval reflects the provincial government’s commitment to prioritizing public health and ensuring equitable access to essential medical services. This policy could serve as a model for other regions aiming to strengthen their healthcare systems through innovative insurance schemes and policy reforms.
