The Pakistan Armed Forces solemnly observed the martyrdom anniversary of Havildar Lalak Jan Shaheed, Nishan-e-Haider, on Monday, paying homage to his remarkable bravery and ultimate sacrifice during the 1999 Kargil conflict. The day was marked by a tribute from the highest military leadership, including Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces, Admiral Naveed Ashraf, Chief of the Naval Staff, and Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Baber Sidhu, Chief of the Air Staff.

In a formal statement, the military highlighted Lalak Jan’s steadfast dedication and heroic conduct, describing his actions as a shining example of unwavering commitment to the nation’s defense. On this day in 1999, Lalak Jan held his position against relentless enemy assaults, refusing to retreat despite the intensifying combat around him.

Critically wounded during the fierce fighting, he declined evacuation and chose to remain with his troops, leading them courageously until he was martyred. His determination and leadership under fire exemplified extraordinary valor, inspiring both his comrades and the nation.

The military emphasized that Lalak Jan’s sacrifice remains a powerful symbol of courage and selfless service, continuing to inspire soldiers today with the same ideals of duty and honor he upheld over two decades ago. The statement concluded with a solemn vow from Pakistan’s armed forces and its people to protect the country’s sovereignty with the same spirit demonstrated by Lalak Jan on the battlefield.

Born on April 1, 1967, Lalak Jan enlisted in the Pakistan Army on December 10, 1984, and served with the Northern Light Infantry Regiment. During the 1999 Kargil conflict, he volunteered for one of the most challenging assignments—a forward post situated on a rugged mountain peak directly targeted by Indian forces.

Throughout the conflict, he repelled multiple enemy attacks, inflicting significant losses on the opposition. On July 7, heavy mortar fire critically wounded him, yet he steadfastly held his position. Refusing evacuation, he continued to fight until his injuries claimed his life, sealing his legacy as a national hero.
