China Test-Fires Missile into Pacific Amid Rising Regional Tensions

China recently conducted a missile test by launching a projectile from a nuclear-powered submarine into the Pacific Ocean, intensifying worries among regional powers such as Japan, Australia, and New Zealand about Beijing’s expanding military presence in this strategically vital area.

The missile, equipped with a dummy warhead, was fired by the People’s Liberation Army Navy at 12:01 pm local time (0401 GMT) on Monday. The missile landed in designated international waters, with Chinese officials describing the exercise as a routine part of their annual military training schedule and emphasizing that it was not directed at any particular nation.

In a significant development, Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong confirmed that China had informed Canberra ahead of the test but criticized the launch as destabilizing. She highlighted concerns over China’s rapid military modernization, which she said lacks the transparency and reassurance expected by regional partners.

This missile test took place just hours after Australia and Fiji formalized a major defense agreement, committing to mutual assistance in the event of an attack, further underscoring the shifting security dynamics in the Pacific.

New Zealand’s Foreign Minister Winston Peters voiced strong apprehension, noting that Beijing had notified Wellington only hours before the test. He described the development as unwelcome and concerning, stressing that New Zealand and its Pacific neighbors do not want the South Pacific to become a testing ground for missile capabilities.

Japan also received prior notification and expressed serious concern about the increased Chinese military activity. Tokyo confirmed that the missile landed outside its exclusive economic zone and that no Japanese assets were harmed. Japanese officials closely monitored the launch, reflecting the heightened vigilance in the region.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning defended the missile test, stating it was conducted safely, professionally, and standard procedures. She urged regional countries not to overinterpret the event and called for respect toward the sovereignty of Pacific island nations.

This missile launch is among the rare occasions China has fired a long-range missile into the sea. It follows a similar intercontinental ballistic missile test earlier in 2024 and coincides with increased Chinese naval activities, including joint exercises with Russia, signaling a growing military footprint in the region, as noted by Taiwanese security officials.
