5.6 Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Islamabad, Peshawar, and KP Regions

On Friday, a significant earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale struck parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Punjab provinces, sending tremors across several major cities including Islamabad and Peshawar. The seismic event was traced back to the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan, with the epicentre located approximately 73 kilometres beneath the earth’s surface, the national seismological centre. Despite the intensity of the quake, initial assessments indicate that there have been no reports of casualties or structural damage so far.

The tremors were widely felt throughout KP, affecting districts such as Malakand and Lower Dir, where residents reported noticeable shaking. Additionally, areas including Hangu, Kohat, Bajaur, and Swat experienced the earthquake’s impact. The seismic waves extended further to Buner, Shangla, North Waziristan, Swabi, and Upper Dir, highlighting the broad geographical reach of the event. Citizens in these regions expressed concern but remained largely safe, underscoring the resilience of local communities in earthquake-prone zones.

Pakistan’s vulnerability to earthquakes is largely due to its geographical position along the converging boundary of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. This tectonic activity has historically subjected the country to frequent and sometimes devastating seismic events. For instance, earlier this year on January 19, 2025, a 5.8-magnitude earthquake shook Islamabad, Swat, and Hunza, reminding the nation of the persistent seismic risks. The catastrophic earthquake of 2005 in Azad Kashmir remains etched in collective memory, having claimed over 73,000 lives and leaving millions displaced.

Moreover, the province of Balochistan has also suffered from powerful earthquakes in recent years. In 2021, a quake in Harnai resulted in at least 20 fatalities and complicated rescue operations due to landslides triggered by the tremors. These incidents highlight the challenges faced by emergency responders in Pakistan’s rugged and mountainous terrain, which often hampers timely relief efforts and increases the vulnerability of affected populations.

Experts emphasize the importance of preparedness and robust disaster management strategies in mitigating the impact of future earthquakes. The recent tremors felt across KP and Punjab serve as a stark reminder of the ongoing seismic threats that loom over the region. Authorities continue to monitor seismic activity closely and urge residents to remain vigilant and adhere to safety protocols to minimize risks during such natural events.
