Female Doctor Fatally Shot by Unknown Gunmen in Kohat Sparks Protests and Hospital Closures

A tragic and shocking incident unfolded in Kohat, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, when a female doctor was brutally shot dead by unidentified armed assailants while she was returning home after completing her hospital duties. This violent attack has sent ripples of fear and outrage throughout the medical community and the general public alike, leading to immediate protests and the closure of several healthcare facilities in the region.

The incident occurred on a busy double road near the Kohat Development Authority (KDA) area, just outside a hospital where the doctor had been working. Eyewitnesses reported that the attackers opened fire indiscriminately, leaving Dr. Mehwish critically wounded. Unfortunately, she succumbed to her injuries at the scene before any medical assistance could be rendered. The assailants fled swiftly, leaving behind a scene of chaos and grief.

Law enforcement agencies have promptly launched a thorough investigation into the killing. Police officials are meticulously gathering evidence, including reviewing CCTV footage from the vicinity and collecting statements from witnesses present at the time of the shooting. Despite these efforts, the identities of the gunmen remain unknown, and no arrests have been made so far. Authorities have assured the public that all possible leads will be pursued to bring the perpetrators to justice.

In the wake of this heinous crime, the Young Doctors Association (YDA) has taken a strong stand by announcing the closure of Liaquat Memorial Hospital along with all other medical facilities in Kohat. This decision was made as a form of protest to highlight the grave security concerns faced by healthcare professionals, especially female doctors, who are now feeling vulnerable in their workplaces and while commuting. The YDA has expressed deep disappointment over the lack of adequate protection for medical staff, emphasizing that such attacks undermine the safety and morale of those dedicated to saving lives.

Dr. Ubaid, the president of the Young Doctors Association, declared that the protest would persist until the culprits are apprehended and brought to justice. He warned that the strike could potentially spread across the entire province if swift action is not taken. Dr. Ubaid passionately appealed to the government and law enforcement agencies to prioritize this case and ensure that the killers face the full force of the law. He also highlighted the tireless commitment of doctors who serve the public around the clock, even during the holy month of Ramadan, questioning whether such sacrifices deserve this kind of treatment.

The ongoing strike has severely disrupted medical services in Kohat, leaving patients in distress as hospitals remain closed. Those requiring urgent medical attention, routine check-ups, and other healthcare services are facing significant difficulties, exacerbating the already challenging situation in the area. The closure of hospitals has sparked concern among citizens, who are now urging authorities to restore peace and security so that medical services can resume without further delay.

This tragic event has once again brought to light the pressing issue of security for healthcare workers in Pakistan, particularly in regions prone to violence. It underscores the urgent need for enhanced protective measures and swift justice to ensure that doctors and medical staff can perform their duties without fear. As investigations continue, the community awaits decisive action to prevent such incidents from recurring in the future.
