Sinner aims to advance as Gauff pursues Wimbledon breakthrough

World number one Jannik Sinner is set to move closer to defending his Wimbledon crown on Friday, facing American Jenson Brooksby in the third round. After a challenging five-set opener, the Italian found his rhythm with a straight-sets victory over Nuno Borges, though he acknowledges there is still room to enhance his game.

“I’m focusing on coming to the net more, playing aggressively, and improving my movement. The initial matches are always tough, but now I feel past that stage,” Sinner remarked. He also appears to have recovered from the torn toenail that troubled him during his first-round match.

Despite having defeated Brooksby in straight sets during their only previous encounter in 2021, Sinner anticipates a much more demanding match this time. Brooksby’s unorthodox style and ability to prolong rallies make him a formidable adversary. “It will be a very different and challenging match. I’m eager to compete,” Sinner added.

On the women’s side, Coco Gauff is aiming to extend her impressive form as she chases a breakthrough at Wimbledon, where she has yet to progress beyond the fourth round. The American believes her improved serve could be a key factor this year.

Following a hard-fought win over Solana Sierra in the second round, Gauff highlighted her serving performance, which included 10 aces and only five double faults, as a significant confidence booster. “I’m very pleased with how I fought and competed, especially with my serving,” said the two-time Grand Slam champion.

Gauff will face fellow American Claire Liu in the third round. Having won both of their previous meetings in straight sets, she aims to keep her momentum going with another strong victory.

Elsewhere, Canadian third seed Felix Auger-Aliassime is scheduled to play against American qualifier Michael Zheng, who has made a breakthrough after graduating from Columbia University earlier this year. Auger-Aliassime praised Zheng’s rapid development, noting that his intelligence and variety on court make him a challenging opponent despite limited Grand Slam experience.

Friday’s lineup also includes seven-time Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic taking on Arthur Rinderknech on Centre Court, while world number one Aryna Sabalenka faces former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko.
