Petition Filed in Peshawar High Court Demands Action Against Ramazan Price Surge

A formal petition has been submitted to the Peshawar High Court addressing the alarming rise in prices of essential commodities during the holy month of Ramazan. The legal plea calls for urgent intervention by government authorities to rein in the escalating costs of basic food items, which have placed a heavy financial strain on the general public.

The petition specifically identifies several key officials as respondents, including representatives from the National Food Security authorities, the Secretary of the Ministry of Food, the Chief Secretary, and the Commissioner of Peshawar. These officials are being held responsible for their apparent failure to take effective measures to prevent the unchecked inflation that has gripped the market in recent weeks.

Highlighting the critical situation, the petitioner emphasized that the soaring prices of staples such as flour, fruits, and vegetables have made it increasingly difficult for ordinary citizens to afford their daily necessities. The demand for these items traditionally rises during Ramazan, but the current surge in prices far exceeds normal seasonal fluctuations, exacerbating the hardships faced by families across the region.

The plea further argues that the unchecked profiteering and arbitrary price hikes violate Article 3 of the Constitution, which mandates the elimination of exploitation in all forms. It points to administrative negligence and a lack of proactive governance as key factors contributing to the worsening inflationary pressures, which have intensified the economic challenges for many households.

In light of these concerns, the petition urges the court to direct the relevant authorities to submit a comprehensive report detailing the steps taken so far to address the inflation crisis. Moreover, it requests the judiciary to order strict regulation and monitoring of prices for essential commodities during Ramazan, ensuring that the public can access these goods at fair and reasonable rates.

This legal action comes at a time when citizens are already grappling with economic difficulties, and the rising cost of living during Ramazan threatens to deepen their financial woes. The court’s intervention is seen as a crucial step toward holding officials accountable and protecting consumers from exploitation during this sacred month.
