The foreign ministers of the Arab League convened in Amman, Jordan, on Monday for a pivotal meeting aimed at coordinating responses to escalating regional challenges and formalizing leadership changes within the organization.

Hosted by Jordan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Ayman Safadi, the high-level gathering served as a precursor to the resumed 165th ordinary session of the League’s Council, chaired by Bahrain. The discussions centered on the deteriorating humanitarian conditions in the Gaza Strip, increasing tensions in the West Bank, and broader efforts to maintain regional stability.

In his address, Safadi underscored the importance of unified Arab action as the most effective means to manage the unprecedented geopolitical tensions affecting the Middle East. The Palestinian issue dominated the agenda, with ministers demanding an immediate halt to hostilities in the occupied West Bank and stressing the need for sustained humanitarian assistance to Gaza.

Additionally, the meeting reviewed recent diplomatic initiatives, including mediation and de-escalation efforts, while expressing full solidarity with Lebanon. The ministers highlighted the critical importance of supporting Lebanon’s sovereignty and maintaining active ceasefires to avoid further regional escalation.

In a significant development, the council officially endorsed former Egyptian Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmy as the new Secretary-General of the Arab League. Fahmy, whose nomination was strongly supported by Cairo, is set to assume office on July 1, 2026.

Fahmy has committed to developing a renewed strategic vision focused on protecting Arab national security and enhancing the League’s economic and social integration programs among member states.
