On Sunday night in Karachi’s DHA Phase 6, a speeding vehicle veered off the road and crashed into a tent hosting a religious gathering near Saba Avenue, injuring at least 11 individuals. The car appeared to have lost control, initially striking several pedestrians before smashing through the canopy set up outside an imambargah.
Senior Superintendent of Police South, Mehzor Ali, confirmed that the driver and two passengers were apprehended shortly after the incident. The number of injured increased throughout the evening as more victims arrived for medical treatment, with initial reports indicating five injured but later revised to 11.
Security footage captured the vehicle entering the road at high speed and losing control, with the collision occurring at 9:26 pm. The video shows the car hitting pedestrians before crashing into the religious tent, causing bystanders to scramble for safety as the vehicle tore through the makeshift structure.
In a significant development, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah took immediate notice of the accident and requested a detailed report from the Additional Inspector General of Police. The briefing revealed that the vehicle’s brakes had likely failed, preventing the driver from stopping before the crash.
Chief Minister Shah instructed authorities to impound the vehicle and ensure the driver’s arrest without delay. He also called for a thorough inquiry into the circumstances of the accident and extended his prayers for the swift recovery of those injured.
Police have launched an investigation to determine whether the crash was caused by mechanical failure or driver negligence, with officers actively working to establish the exact cause of the incident.
