Five Dead in Israeli Airstrikes on Southern Lebanon Hours After Ceasefire

At least five individuals lost their lives in Israeli airstrikes and drone attacks across southern Lebanon on Saturday, mere hours after a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hezbollah was implemented. Lebanese state media reported that Israeli warplanes and drones conducted multiple strikes in the Nabatieh region overnight and into the early hours of Saturday, destroying residential buildings and homes.

In addition to the air raids, Israeli artillery shelled Nabatieh and its surrounding areas before dawn, raising concerns about the stability of the fragile truce. These attacks occurred immediately following the ceasefire deal reached on Friday between Israel and the Iran-backed Hezbollah group, which had aimed to halt the recent surge in hostilities across Lebanon.

The ceasefire was officially set to begin at 4:00 pm on Friday, as confirmed by a United States official. A senior Israeli official and two Hezbollah representatives also acknowledged the agreement, fostering hopes for a temporary pause in the escalating conflict prior to the renewed bombardment.

This recent escalation follows months of intensifying cross-border clashes and extensive military operations, which have displaced tens of thousands of civilians on both sides of the Blue Line. Israel’s campaign in southern Lebanon has increasingly targeted urban centers and residential areas in an effort to push Hezbollah forces away from its northern border. This strategy has drawn widespread international criticism due to the rising civilian casualties and the destruction of vital infrastructure.

Efforts to establish a lasting peace have repeatedly faltered amid disagreements over border security, disarmament, and regional sovereignty. While the US-brokered ceasefire on Friday was seen as a significant step toward halting the violence, the rapid return of hostilities highlights the deep-rooted instability and the challenges involved in enforcing agreements between the conflicting parties.

The Nabatieh area has been among the hardest hit during recent weeks of conflict. The early morning strikes on Saturday caused extensive damage to civilian infrastructure, with emergency responders working urgently to clear rubble and search for survivors.

Neither the Israeli military nor Hezbollah have released official statements regarding the recent attacks or the current status of the ceasefire agreement, leaving the situation uncertain as tensions remain high.
