Former Prime Minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan, 74, was temporarily transferred from Adiala jail to a hospital in Islamabad overnight for a medical injection before being returned to prison, his party confirmed on Monday.
Khan has been held at Adiala jail since late 2023, facing numerous legal cases that PTI claims are politically motivated attempts to sideline him from the political arena. PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan stated on social media that the former premier was taken to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) for an injection and then shifted back to jail.
He reiterated demands for Khan’s transfer to a hospital for comprehensive treatment and called for an immediate meeting with his family. Authorities have not issued any statements regarding Khan’s medical condition or details about the injection administered during the hospital visit.
This brief hospital transfer is part of a series of late-night medical visits since Khan’s incarceration, with his health becoming a pivotal issue for his party. PTI leaders and Khan’s family have frequently accused the authorities of keeping him in solitary confinement and denying access to his personal doctors.
Khan was removed from office in 2022 following a parliamentary vote of no confidence. Despite imprisonment, he remains one of Pakistan’s most popular political figures, with PTI winning the most seats as independent candidates in the last general election.
Since his arrest in August 2023, Khan’s health has been a contentious topic between the government and PTI. In early 2026, medical evaluations revealed he suffers from Central Retinal Vein Occlusion (CRVO), a serious condition that can lead to permanent vision loss if untreated. In January 2026, he was covertly transferred under heavy security to PIMS for a 20-minute specialized ophthalmic procedure to address the blockage.
Khan’s personal physicians, including Dr. Aasim Yusuf and Dr. Faisal Sultan, have publicly urged that he be moved to a tertiary care facility like Shifa International Hospital for a full multidisciplinary assessment. The opposition has consistently rejected state-conducted medical examinations carried out without the presence of Khan’s family or personal doctors, describing them as secretive and malicious.
Besides his current ailments, Khan continues to recover from injuries sustained in an assassination attempt in November 2022, when he was shot in the leg during a political rally in Wazirabad.
Regarding legal matters, Khan faces over 150 cases ranging from alleged corruption to treason. Although his legal team has secured bail or overturned convictions in several key cases, overlapping charges have kept him incarcerated.
Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, were accused of unlawfully retaining and selling state gifts received during his premiership at undervalued prices, resulting in multiple sentences, some of which have been suspended on appeal. He was also accused of leaking a classified diplomatic cable sent by Pakistan’s ambassador to the United States, which the state claimed he used to allege a foreign conspiracy behind his ouster. Though sentenced to 10 years in prison for this, the Islamabad High Court later acquitted him of treason charges.
In the Al-Qadir Trust case, Khan and Bushra Bibi face allegations of accepting multi-billion-rupee land bribes from real estate tycoon Malik Riaz in exchange for laundering 190 million pounds sterling back to the tycoon. This money had been seized by the UK’s National Crime Agency and returned to Pakistan.
Additionally, Khan and his wife were sentenced to seven months in prison after a court ruled their 2018 marriage violated Islamic laws regarding the mandatory waiting period (iddat) following a woman’s divorce. This verdict drew widespread condemnation from civil society and human rights groups, who viewed it as an exploitation of family law for political purposes.
Following Khan’s initial brief arrest in May 2023, widespread protests erupted, some turning violent and targeting military installations. Khan is currently facing multiple charges of incitement and abetment of violence related to these riots, which authorities have cited to repeatedly extend his judicial remand.
