Sindh Assembly Passes Resolution to End Karachi Power Outages Amid Heatwave

The Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) has introduced a resolution in the Sindh Assembly addressing the persistent scheduled and unscheduled power cuts by K-Electric in Karachi, especially during the ongoing heatwave. The resolution, presented by MQM-P MPA Maaz Mehboob, calls for an immediate cessation of load shedding during extreme weather, highlighting the severe difficulties faced by residents.

It states that with the arrival of the hot season, residents across Karachi, including those in residential neighborhoods and specifically in Mehboob’s constituency PS-127, have been subjected to both announced and unannounced power outages. The resolution recalls assurances made last year before the assembly’s special committee that no load shedding would be implemented, yet the public continues to endure hardship and exploitation.

In a significant development, the MQM-P lawmaker accused K-Electric of disregarding the Sindh Assembly’s authority by ignoring directives from the special committee. The resolution demands that K-Electric be officially instructed to refrain from any electricity load shedding in Karachi during future heatwaves, in line with government orders.

Meanwhile, the MQM-P has also called for legal proceedings against K-Electric in instances where deaths occur due to heat-related conditions worsened by power outages. The resolution explicitly states that cases should be registered against the power company for such fatalities.

Mehboob emphasized that residents of PS-127 are currently enduring between 12 to 16 hours of daily load shedding, a situation he described as unacceptable and urged authorities to take immediate action. Furthermore, the resolution demands that K-Electric be required to submit a comprehensive report to the Sindh Assembly detailing all announced and unannounced power outages conducted in Karachi.
