Former England footballer Kevin Keegan has openly revealed that he is currently battling stage four cancer, marking the most advanced phase of the illness. He shared this update for the first time during a live discussion with sports journalist Pete Graves.

Stage four indicates that the cancer has metastasized, spreading to other parts of the body. Keegan’s family initially disclosed his diagnosis in January 2026, explaining that he was undergoing further evaluation for persistent abdominal symptoms at a hospital.

Keegan appeared on Pete Graves’s show, “An Audience with Kevin Keegan,” which gained widespread attention after airing on Sunday, May 31, at the Tyne Theatre and Opera House. During the event, he recounted the moment he learned about his diagnosis, stating, “They said we have a top doctor with this new way of fighting what you have got. Which is stage four cancer.”

The football community has since shown strong support for the two-time European Footballer of the Year as he continues his treatment. Upon returning to Newcastle for the live event, Keegan received a heartfelt standing ovation from the audience.

On stage, the former Newcastle United forward and manager shared more about his journey: “I was in a car accident and, through that, I had to have an operation. Whilst having the scan for the operation, they found out I had cancer.” He added that the specialist he met was a Liverpool supporter, joking, “I knew I wouldn’t walk alone.”

Keegan also revealed the prognosis he was given, saying, “He said, ‘Kevin, this new treatment, I’ve got a tremendous strike rate.’ I asked, ‘What’s your strike rate?’ He said, ’33 percent.’ I thought it would be 80 or 90 percent. Thirty-three percent! I’m still here at the moment.”

Throughout his distinguished career, Keegan played for clubs including Scunthorpe United, Liverpool, Hamburg, Southampton, and Newcastle United. He later managed Newcastle, Fulham, England, and Manchester City, leaving a lasting legacy in football both on and off the pitch.
