Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced on Monday that it had launched an attack on an air base it identified as being involved in a recent US strike on a telecommunications tower on Sirik Island. This move marks a further escalation in the ongoing tensions between Tehran and Washington. The IRGC’s aerospace division confirmed the strike but did not reveal the exact location of the targeted base or provide information on the damage inflicted.
This development follows a US military operation the previous day, which targeted Iranian radar and drone command-and-control facilities located in Goruk and on Qeshm Island. The US Central Command stated that the strikes were a response to what it described as “aggressive Iranian actions,” including the downing of a US MQ-1 drone that was reportedly operating over international waters.
The US military emphasized that the operation aimed to neutralize sites connected to Iran’s drone activities to safeguard American personnel and interests in the region. While Iran has yet to officially acknowledge the US claim of shooting down the drone, the IRGC’s statement implied that Tehran perceives the US strikes on Sirik Island and other locations as part of a broader campaign targeting Iranian military assets.
