Spain Announces World Cup Squad Without Real Madrid Players for First Time

Spain has unveiled its 26-man roster for the upcoming World Cup, marking a historic first as no players from Real Madrid have been selected. This decision highlights a significant shift in the national team’s composition under head coach Luis de la Fuente.

De la Fuente’s squad is notably influenced by Barcelona, which contributes eight players who form the backbone of the team. The European champions enter the tournament as strong contenders, having recently secured the Euro 2024 title in Germany.

The Barcelona representatives include Joan Garcia, Pau Cubarsi, Eric Garcia, Gavi, Pedri, Dani Olmo, Lamine Yamal, and Ferran Torres, underscoring the club’s dominant role in shaping Spain’s national squad. Additionally, several players from the English Premier League are part of the lineup, such as Arsenal’s David Raya, Martin Zubimendi, and Mikel Merino, alongside Manchester City’s Rodri.

Defensive duties will be shared by Pedro Porro, Marc Cucurella, and Aymeric Laporte. Notably, some experienced players like Unai Simón and Dani Carvajal have been left out of the final selection. De la Fuente addressed the absence of Real Madrid players by emphasizing that selections were made solely on sporting merit, dismissing any notion of club bias.

He also highlighted the importance of team unity and expressed confidence that the chosen squad members are fully prepared to compete at the highest level. Spain now aims to capture its second World Cup title, building on their previous success in South Africa in 2010.
