Bruce Dern has opened up about one of the most painful moments of his life, discussing the tragic death of his eldest daughter in a heartfelt segment of a new documentary chronicling his extensive Hollywood career.
In Dernsie: The Amazing Life of Bruce Dern, the 89-year-old actor recalls the heartbreaking loss of Diane Elizabeth, who drowned in a swimming pool at just 18 months old in 1962. Dern shared Diane Elizabeth with his late ex-wife, actress Diane Ladd, to whom he was married from 1960 until 1969. The couple later had another daughter, Laura Dern, born in 1967, who would go on to win an Oscar.
Reflecting on that tragic day, Dern recounted being interrupted during a sporting event and urgently called home. The documentary reveals that Diane Elizabeth was at the family’s Los Angeles residence with a maid while both parents were away. The toddler had managed to unlock a gate leading to the swimming pool before the fatal accident.
Dern described the profound sorrow he felt upon returning home and seeing his daughter after her death. “It’s the only time in my life, I think, that it broke my heart,” he said, adding, “I never got over it. You never get over it.”
The actor also spoke about how the tragedy impacted his relationship with Ladd, acknowledging that their shared grief prolonged their marriage beyond what might have otherwise been the case. “Because Diane and I shared a tragedy, we stayed together longer than we should have,” Dern explained, noting that the pain surrounding their loss was never fully addressed between them.
Years later, the couple welcomed Laura Dern, who appears in the documentary and joined her father at the film’s Cannes Film Festival premiere. Diane Ladd, a three-time Oscar nominee, passed away in November 2025 at the age of 89. She appears briefly in the film through a video message expressing gratitude to Bruce “for the children you gave me,” adding emotional depth to the family’s story.
