Scarlett Johansson Says True Work-Life Balance Is Impossible Despite Fame

Scarlett Johansson, renowned globally for her blockbuster roles and an estimated fortune of $165 million, recently shared her perspective on the elusive nature of work-life balance. Despite her immense success, the actress revealed she no longer believes that achieving true equilibrium between career, family, and personal life is possible.

During an interview on CBS Sunday Morning, Johansson emphasized that acknowledging the impossibility of perfect balance is actually the first step toward managing it effectively. She explained that regardless of one’s level of success, compromises are inevitable, whether in professional or personal spheres.

“There will always be some kind of deficit somewhere,” Johansson remarked, noting that over time she has learned to be more compassionate with herself instead of chasing perfection. “You can’t do all of these things all the time,” she added. “There’s just like, ‘Is it good enough?’”

As a mother of two, balancing marriage, acting commitments, and entrepreneurial ventures—including her skincare brand, The Outset—Johansson’s definition of success has evolved. Parenting, in particular, has reshaped how she measures achievement, even if it means not always being the “most popular.” She recalled advice she once received: “If you’re successful as a parent like 75% of the time, that’s good.”

Best known for acclaimed films such as Lost in Translation, Marriage Story, and Marvel’s Black Widow, Johansson remains one of Hollywood’s highest-paid actresses. Yet, she suggests that true fulfillment comes not from flawless execution but from accepting that balance may never appear perfect.
