Everton’s pursuit of a European football spot suffered a setback after they were held to a 2-2 draw by Crystal Palace on Sunday. The result leaves David Moyes’ squad six points behind the Premier League’s top six, with only two matches remaining in the season.
This outcome extends Everton’s winless streak in league play to five games and positions them 10th in the standings on 49 points, further diminishing their chances of qualifying for European competition next season.
In a significant development, manager David Moyes expressed cautious optimism about the team’s progress despite the disappointing result. He emphasized that while the challenge is growing tougher with each game without a win, Everton’s European hopes are not yet extinguished.
“It’s remarkable that we are still discussing the possibility of Everton reaching Europe with just two games left, and we remain in contention,” Moyes stated. “However, the difficulty increases every time we fail to secure a victory.”
Everton has not participated in the UEFA Champions League for two decades, with their most recent European appearance occurring during the 2017-18 Europa League season.
Although the draw keeps Everton mathematically alive in the race for a top-six finish, their chances now hinge on winning both remaining fixtures and favorable outcomes in other matches.
