US President Donald Trump announced on Friday that the United States anticipates receiving Iran’s response “tonight” concerning a US-backed proposal designed to ease tensions over Tehran’s nuclear program and broader Middle East conflicts. Speaking to reporters before heading to an event at his golf club in Sterling, Trump revealed that Washington was still awaiting Tehran’s official reaction, which had been transmitted through Pakistani intermediaries.
When asked if Iran had formally replied to the offer, Trump said, “We’ll hear from them supposedly tonight.” Regarding whether Tehran was intentionally delaying the process, he stated that it was unclear but suggested the situation would soon become apparent.
In a significant development, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed optimism about receiving a meaningful response from Iran later on Friday. During a media briefing in Rome, Rubio indicated that Tehran’s reply might pave the way for serious negotiations. “We should know something today,” he said while on an official visit to Italy and the Vatican.
Rubio noted that no formal response had been received yet, pointing out that internal divisions within Iran’s political system might be slowing decision-making. “Their system is highly fractured and dysfunctional, and that may be creating obstacles,” he explained, while expressing hope that talks could eventually progress toward substantive negotiations.
Earlier, Trump dismissed reports describing the US proposal as a simple “one-page offer,” emphasizing that the initiative was far more comprehensive and included multiple demands related to Iran’s nuclear activities. the president, the proposal requires Iran to permanently abandon any pursuit of nuclear weapons and comply with several conditions set by Washington.
“It’s much more than a one-page offer,” Trump asserted. “It includes commitments that they will not have nuclear weapons and that they will hand over the nuclear material and other things we want.” When questioned about Iran’s acceptance of these conditions, Trump said Tehran had shown agreement at various points but indicated that shifting leadership dynamics complicated the process. “They agree, but the next day they act differently,” he remarked. “We are dealing with different sets of leaders.”
