Trump Halts Strait of Hormuz Reopening After Saudi Airspace Blockade

US President Donald Trump was compelled to abruptly abandon a high-profile initiative to reopen the Strait of Hormuz after Saudi Arabia reportedly denied American military access to its airspace. This unexpected move effectively derailed “Project Freedom,” a naval escort operation that Trump had recently publicized on social media.

The suspension of the operation underscores escalating tensions between Washington and its Gulf allies. Saudi Arabia was reportedly taken by surprise by the unilateral announcement and responded by restricting US aircraft from operating out of the Prince Sultan Air Base.

This diplomatic setback reveals a rare public rift within the longstanding US-Saudi partnership. Attempts to resolve the dispute through a phone conversation between President Trump and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman were unsuccessful, with Riyadh expressing dissatisfaction over being excluded from the planning process.

While the White House has not disclosed specific reasons for the reversal, the decision was crucial to restoring essential US military access to Saudi airspace. Despite the disagreement, Saudi officials affirmed their continued support for diplomatic efforts currently being facilitated by Pakistan, aiming to achieve a lasting resolution to the conflict that began on 28 February. This conflict has severely disrupted global energy routes and increased volatility in international markets.

Meanwhile, the news of military de-escalation and the prospect of a peace agreement triggered significant reactions in global markets on Wednesday. Brent crude futures dropped roughly 11 percent to nearly $98 per barrel before stabilizing, while global stock indices surged as investors anticipated an end to the blockade.

The proposed peace deal, reportedly led by Trump’s envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff, involves a concise memorandum intended to formally cease hostilities and establish a 30-day period for detailed negotiations. However, the agreement remains precarious. Iranian officials dismissed the proposal as an “American wish-list,” and Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Speaker of the Iranian Parliament, ridiculed the reports on social media, suggesting the US was attempting to portray a military setback as a diplomatic success.
