US and Iran Escalate Attacks Amid Rising Strait of Hormuz Tensions

The United States and Iran intensified their confrontation in the Gulf on Tuesday, exchanging missile and drone attacks that heightened tensions over control of the strategic Strait of Hormuz. This escalation threatens the fragile ceasefire that had been in place in the region.

In a significant development, US President Donald Trump unveiled “Project Freedom,” an initiative designed to escort commercial vessels stranded in the crucial waterway. The Strait of Hormuz is a vital global energy route that has faced ongoing disruptions since the conflict escalated earlier this year.

Several merchant ships in the Gulf were reported to have suffered explosions and fires. The US military claimed to have destroyed six small Iranian military boats, while an oil facility in the United Arab Emirates was set ablaze following missile strikes attributed to Iran.

Washington’s move represents its first clear military effort to reopen the shipping corridor since a ceasefire was declared last month. However, the initiative has had limited success, as major shipping companies remain hesitant to resume transit amid persistent hostilities.

Iran issued a stern warning that any attempt to bypass its control over the strait would trigger a strong retaliation. Iranian leaders have consistently maintained that navigation through the waterway requires their approval.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi emphasized that the recent events highlight the absence of a military solution to the crisis. He noted ongoing diplomatic efforts, including mediation by Pakistan, while urging regional countries to avoid deeper involvement in the conflict.

Despite the heightened tensions, the US military reported that two merchant vessels successfully passed through the strait under naval escort. Iran, however, denied that any such crossings had occurred.

Additional incidents contributed to the uncertainty in the area. South Korea reported a fire onboard one of its vessels transiting the strait, though the cause remains unclear. British maritime authorities also confirmed that two ships were attacked off the UAE coast.

Iran subsequently released a map claiming an expanded maritime control zone extending beyond the strait, including parts of the UAE coastline.

The UAE condemned the attacks as a dangerous escalation and reserved the right to respond. Authorities in Fujairah, a key oil export hub, reported a fire at an oil installation following a drone strike. As a precaution, schools in affected areas shifted to remote learning.

Oil prices surged by more than five percent amid the escalating tensions, reflecting fears of disruptions to global energy supplies.

Iran further warned commercial shipping to coordinate with its military before entering the region, cautioning that foreign forces attempting to approach the strait could be targeted.

Although both sides agreed weeks ago to halt large-scale attacks, efforts to restart formal peace talks have stalled. Iran stated that the US recently responded to a peace proposal via Pakistan, but details remain unclear.

Analysts warn that the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the Strait of Hormuz—a critical passage for a significant portion of the world’s oil—poses a serious risk to global markets. Prolonged disruption could have far-reaching effects on energy prices and international trade flows.
