Chelsea’s Champions League Hopes Dim as McFarlane Calls for Final Effort

Chelsea’s interim manager Calum McFarlane has acknowledged the significant challenge his team faces in qualifying for next season’s Champions League, with the club currently 10 points adrift of the top five in the Premier League standings.

McFarlane, who resumed his role last month following the dismissal of Liam Rosenior after a five-game losing streak, started his second spell with a 1-0 victory over Leeds United, securing Chelsea’s place in the FA Cup final.

Presently sitting eighth in the league with 48 points, Chelsea are preparing to host Nottingham Forest on Monday. When questioned about their chances of reaching the Champions League, McFarlane adopted a pragmatic approach, emphasizing the importance of focusing on winning upcoming matches without distraction.

“We must concentrate on winning our games and avoid looking beyond that,” he stated. “The support of our fans is crucial; their positive energy can really lift the team. There is still much to play for this season.”

Looking ahead, Chelsea will face Manchester City in the FA Cup final on May 16. McFarlane noted that last week’s win had significantly improved morale at Stamford Bridge.

“It’s tough when results and performances don’t go your way,” he explained. “A single victory can dramatically change the mood and spirit within the squad.”

Regarding injuries, McFarlane confirmed that captain Reece James, who is recovering from a hamstring strain, and defender Levi Colwill have both returned to training. He remained cautious about rushing their returns to full fitness.

“There is still time before the next match, so we will monitor their progress closely. Levi has been out for an extended period, and Reece had a good run before his recent injury, so we want to ensure they are fully ready before coming back,” McFarlane added.
