NFL Draft Surprise: Rams Shock with Unexpected Quarterback Selection

The 2026 NFL Draft opened with largely anticipated selections at the top, but the evening quickly shifted as one particular pick dominated discussions. As expected, the Las Vegas Raiders secured quarterback Fernando Mendoza first overall. The Indiana standout, who completed 72 percent of his passes in 2025, is set to lead the Raiders’ rebuild under new head coach Klint Kubiak.

Following the initial picks, the draft’s momentum changed notably. Arizona made a bold move by selecting Notre Dame’s Jeremiyah Love at No. 3. The 20-year-old is recognized as one of the draft’s most versatile offensive talents, capable of influencing the game both as a runner and receiver.

The Dallas Cowboys enhanced their roster by trading up to pick safety Caleb Downs at No. 11, later adding edge rusher Malachi Lawrence in the same round. Meanwhile, the Cleveland Browns focused on strengthening their offense by drafting offensive tackle Spencer Fano and wide receiver KC Concepcion, signaling a clear intent to rebuild their offensive unit.

In a significant development, the Los Angeles Rams surprised many by selecting Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson at No. 13. With veteran Matthew Stafford still leading a team considered a Super Bowl contender, this choice raised questions about the franchise’s immediate priorities. Simpson, who threw for 3,567 yards and 28 touchdowns last season, has limited experience with only 15 college starts, suggesting the Rams are prioritizing long-term development over short-term gains.

Other selections also sparked debate. The Kansas City Chiefs traded up to No. 6 to pick LSU cornerback Mansoor Delane, addressing defensive needs but at the cost of multiple draft picks, which raised some concerns. Minnesota’s choice of defensive tackle Caleb Banks at No. 18 was scrutinized due to his recent foot surgery and injury history.

Despite these controversies, several teams earned praise for making strong value picks, with analysts noting quality selections throughout the draft despite its unpredictability. The event continues with Rounds 2 and 3 scheduled for Friday, featuring notable prospects like Washington wide receiver Denzel Boston and Missouri edge rusher Zion Young still available.
