HARIPUR: Federal Minister for Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit Baltistan, Amir Muqam, visited the families affected by the gas leak tragedy at Hattar Industrial Estate on Saturday. The incident claimed the lives of eight members of a single family. Muqam expressed his heartfelt condolences and prayers for the departed, describing the loss as immeasurable.

He announced that the federal government would provide financial aid amounting to Rs1 million for each deceased individual and Rs500,000 for those injured in the accident. Muqam emphasized that while the lives lost cannot be restored, both federal and provincial authorities must ensure prompt support to the grieving family.

In a significant development, he also urged the establishment of a specialized burn treatment unit within the industrial estate. Furthermore, he called for a thorough and transparent investigation into the cause of the explosion, insisting that strict action be taken against any officials or departments found negligent.

The explosion in the gas pipeline at Hattar Industrial Estate resulted in the death of eight family members, including women and children. At least 11 others sustained injuries and are currently receiving medical care in hospitals.

Meanwhile, the funeral prayers for the victims were conducted in Hattar, attended by local officials, political leaders, religious figures, and community members. The tragedy has deeply affected the Haripur district, which remains in mourning.

In response, the Hazara commissioner constituted a seven-member committee, led by the Haripur deputy commissioner, to investigate the explosion and determine accountability. The committee is expected to submit its findings within 24 hours.

Meanwhile, law enforcement officials reported the suspension and arrest of a police officer accused of assaulting a relative of the affected family. District Police Officer Shafiullah Gandapur assured that action would be taken against those involved.

A case has been registered against seven police personnel, including a check post in-charge, for allegedly assaulting relatives of the victims. Havaldar Yousaf and six others face charges related to the incident. The main accused was arrested under sections 337, 148, and 149 of the Pakistan Penal Code and later remanded to judicial custody by a senior civil judge in Haripur.

The case pertains to the alleged violent treatment of Ahmad Ali, uncle of the deceased children, who was reportedly beaten and taken to a police station before being released after public outcry. A video circulated on social media showed Yousaf claiming innocence and accusing police officials of arresting him before he escaped custody. However, authorities clarified that the video was recorded prior to his arrest and confirmed that the officer is now in custody.

A police spokesperson reiterated that the law applies equally to everyone, confirming the registration of a formal FIR and ongoing legal proceedings.
