Bradley Cooper is set to take on a multifaceted role in the upcoming Ocean’s Eleven prequel, where he will write, direct, and star alongside Margot Robbie. The film, announced during Warner Bros’ CinemaCon presentation in Las Vegas, is scheduled for theatrical release on June 25, 2027. It will expand the popular heist franchise by exploring a story set decades before the original Ocean’s Eleven.
The narrative will delve into the origins of Danny Ocean’s family, focusing on his parents, who are portrayed as expert criminals in their own right. Margot Robbie, who appeared virtually at the event, revealed that the plot centers on the couple in their prime as they attempt a daring heist during the 1962 Monaco Grand Prix. This glamorous and high-stakes Formula One event provides a fresh European backdrop, shifting away from the Las Vegas casino environment of the earlier trilogy and introducing elements of motorsport and international intrigue.
Robbie is also producing the project through her LuckyChap banner, maintaining her ongoing partnership with Warner Bros on major studio ventures. The screenplay is penned by Carrie Solomon. Although the film has not yet been given an official title, it is currently referred to as an Ocean’s prequel in studio communications.
Cooper’s involvement comes after director Lee Isaac Chung exited the project due to creative differences, marking a new creative direction under Cooper’s leadership. This will combine his well-established acting career with his expanding experience behind the camera.
The Ocean’s franchise originally began with Steven Soderbergh’s Ocean’s Eleven in 2001, itself a remake of the 1960 Rat Pack film Ocean’s 11. The trilogy, which includes Ocean’s Twelve and Ocean’s Thirteen, starred George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, and Julia Roberts. The series was later extended with Ocean’s Eight in 2018, featuring Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett.
At CinemaCon, Warner Bros also announced several upcoming releases, including titles like The Revenge of La Llorona, Evil Dead Wrath, Final Destination 7, The Flood directed by Zach Cregger, and a new Ocean’s installment alongside an untitled Baz Luhrmann film. Additionally, the studio confirmed development of a Game of Thrones feature titled Aegon’s Conquest, signaling continued growth of its major fantasy and franchise properties.
With production underway and a prominent creative team attached, the Ocean’s prequel is positioned to be one of Warner Bros’ major tentpole releases in 2027.
