Babar Azam’s unbeaten 71 leads Peshawar Zalmi to eight-wicket win

Peshawar Zalmi extended their impressive form in the Pakistan Super League with a commanding eight-wicket victory over Quetta Gladiators. The win was largely driven by a composed and unbeaten half-century from captain Babar Azam, complemented by an effective bowling effort.

Chasing a target of 155, Zalmi began confidently as Mohammad Haris and Babar Azam compiled a brisk 75-run opening partnership. Haris contributed 35 runs off 28 balls before his dismissal, laying a solid foundation for the chase. Babar Azam then anchored the innings, receiving valuable support from Kusal Mendis, who added 21 runs during a steady 49-run stand.

Following Mendis’s departure, Babar ensured the innings remained steady and free from setbacks. He remained unbeaten on 71 runs from 51 deliveries, hitting 10 boundaries, and guided Peshawar Zalmi to victory with nine balls remaining. Aaron Hardie supported him at the end with an unbeaten 18, as the team finished on 156 for 2 in 18.3 overs.

Earlier, Peshawar Zalmi’s decision to field first paid dividends as Quetta Gladiators struggled to build momentum and were bowled out for 154 in their 20 overs. The Gladiators lost an early wicket when Ahsan Ali was dismissed cheaply, increasing pressure on their top order. Captain Saud Shakeel (16) and Rilee Rossouw (28) tried to stabilize the innings, while Hasan Nawaz top-scored with 37 runs. However, regular wickets disrupted their progress, and despite a late cameo from Tom Curran, the lower order could not provide a strong finish.

Peshawar Zalmi’s bowlers maintained tight control throughout the innings. Notably, Muqeem and Mohammad Basit each took three wickets, their disciplined bowling ensuring Quetta never gained the upper hand.

With this victory, Peshawar Zalmi secured their sixth win in seven matches and marked their fifth consecutive triumph, solidifying their strong position on the PSL points table.
