American livestreamer Johnny Somali has been convicted on all charges in South Korea, marking a significant development as he now faces imprisonment with hard labour. This verdict follows a series of incidents during his visit that sparked widespread condemnation, including disrespectful behavior at a memorial honoring victims of wartime sexual slavery.
Prosecutors had requested a three-year prison term with hard labour. Somali is anticipated to serve his sentence in a specialised facility where inmates endure strict regulations, such as no access to mobile phones and limited communication with the outside world.
The controversy erupted after Somali posted videos of himself engaging in inappropriate conduct near the Statue of Peace, a monument dedicated to victims of Japanese wartime atrocities. These clips rapidly circulated online, provoking public outrage and even attracting political scrutiny. One notable video showed a former South Korean Navy SEAL knocking Somali unconscious.
Authorities subsequently detained Somali on additional charges, including disrupting operations at a convenience store and on public transportation, as well as broadcasting content associated with North Korean propaganda.
In court, Somali admitted guilt to several charges related to obstructing business activities and minor offenses but denied allegations involving deepfake content. During the proceedings, he apologized, attributing his behavior to alcohol consumption and a lack of understanding of South Korean laws.
“I did some foolish things under the influence of alcohol, and I realise the consequences. I sincerely apologise,” he stated. Somali also noted that he did not grasp the severity of his actions under South Korean law, suggesting that such behavior might not have been illegal in the United States.
Earlier, Somali contested the deepfake accusations, arguing that similar content shared by others had not led to punishment. Additionally, a plea for leniency submitted by his mother was dismissed by the court.
Drawing significant attention online, the case is now moving toward final sentencing, with authorities expected to announce the precise conditions of his hard labour sentence in the coming days.
