Cate Blanchett Sparks Controversy with Bold Gesture at Olivier Awards

Cate Blanchett attracted significant attention during her appearance at the 2026 Olivier Awards held in London, following a brief but memorable moment on the red carpet. Video footage captured Blanchett making a pointed gesture toward someone off-camera, initially raising her hand and saying, “Stop it,” before seemingly flashing her middle finger. The incident quickly became a talking point, though the identity of the person she addressed and the reason behind the gesture remain unknown.

Blanchett was present at the ceremony as a nominee for Best Actress, recognized for her role in The Seagull, which was performed at the Barbican Theatre the previous Sunday. The production has garnered widespread praise and is reportedly under consideration for a transfer to New York later this year, highlighting its critical success.

On the red carpet, Blanchett wore a striking black Lanvin gown, notable for its shoulder cutouts and a criss-cross design at the midriff, underscoring her bold fashion choices. This moment coincides with Blanchett’s recent candid reflections on fame and her career trajectory. In several interviews, she has openly expressed discomfort with the intense public scrutiny that accompanies her profession and hinted at a possible departure from acting to explore other passions.

“My family roll their eyes every time I say it, but I mean it: I am serious about giving up acting,” Blanchett remarked, adding that there are many other pursuits she wishes to undertake in life. Despite the brief controversy sparked by her red carpet behavior, her presence at the Olivier Awards reaffirmed her status as a leading figure in both theatre and film, as well as her reputation for candidness and authenticity.
