The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Monday granted conditional approval for a ninth-grade student to participate in upcoming examinations amid a dispute over school fees for June and July. The student’s family had approached the court challenging the private school’s early demand for these fees in Karachi.
The petitioner’s legal representative stated that the school administration issued fee challans for June and July ahead of schedule, violating standard procedures. The counsel highlighted that, a circular from the Education Department, fees for these months should be collected during April and May.
Despite complaints filed with the relevant authorities about the premature fee demands, no corrective action was taken. Following initial arguments, the SHC ordered that the student be allowed to sit for the exams without obstruction. However, the court directed that the student’s results be withheld until the case is further examined.
Additionally, the court requested responses from the Advocate General of Sindh and other concerned parties, instructing them to submit their replies at the next hearing.
In a significant development earlier this year, the Sindh government imposed restrictions on private schools, barring them from charging fees beyond admission and monthly tuition. The Directorate of Private Institutions issued a notification explicitly prohibiting additional fee charges, limiting private schools to collecting only admission and monthly tuition fees.
