HBO Renews ‘Rooster’ for Season 2 with Steve Carell, Phil Dunster

HBO has confirmed the renewal of its comedy series Rooster for a second season, with Steve Carell and Phil Dunster set to reprise their leading roles. The show, which made a significant impact upon its debut, will continue its narrative into the spring semester at Ludlow College, promising fans more of its unique blend of humor and character-driven storytelling.

Produced by the acclaimed duo behind Scrubs, Bill Lawrence and Matt Tarses, along with Warner Bros. Television, Rooster has quickly established itself as a standout in HBO’s comedy lineup. This renewal marks another milestone in Bill Lawrence’s impressive track record of multi-season successes in the half-hour comedy format, reinforcing his reputation for creating engaging and enduring series.

The decision to greenlight a second season follows the show’s impressive performance, which included securing a $21 million California tax credit for its upcoming season. Additionally, Rooster attracted 2.4 million cross-platform viewers in the United States within its first three days, making it HBO’s most successful comedy launch in nearly eleven years. This strong audience reception highlights the series’ broad appeal and effective comedic style.

Unlike many of HBO’s typically edgier and creator-driven comedies, Rooster offers a softer, more accessible comedic approach. Alongside Steve Carell and Phil Dunster—known for his role in Ted Lasso—the cast includes notable talents such as Danielle Deadwyler, Lauren Tsai, Connie Britton, and John C. McGinley. With its talented ensemble and creative team, the series is poised to build on its early success and continue captivating viewers in its next chapter.
