Jacob Tierney Plans Multi-Season Arc for Heated Rivalry Adaptation

Jacob Tierney recently revealed an unexpected development regarding the future of the series Heated Rivalry. The creator indicated that the adaptation of Rachel Reid’s novel The Long Game will extend across several seasons, rather than being confined to the upcoming Spring 2027 launch.

In an interview on April 8, 2026, Tierney explained that the story’s vast scope allows for a multi-season narrative. He noted, “There’s a lot of material,” suggesting that the second season might only begin to explore the novel’s depth. This approach underscores Tierney’s dedication to faithfully capturing the original work’s complexity and nuance, ensuring fans receive a rich and authentic experience.

This method aligns with Tierney’s approach to the first season, where he focused on character development and emotional sincerity instead of rushing the plot. Such careful pacing suits The Long Game’s mature themes, which delve into the challenges faced by Shane and Ilya as a well-established couple.

To support this ambitious storytelling, Tierney has enlisted Michael Goldbach, creator of the acclaimed Netflix comedy North of North, as a co-writer. Tierney praised Goldbach as “one of my favorite writers,” highlighting his skill in blending humor with emotional depth and delivering surprising plot twists. Tierney expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration, stating, “I’m so fortunate to read your writing again, especially for my show.” Together, they combine their strengths, with Goldbach focusing on scripts that honor Reid’s intricate relationship dynamics and Tierney managing the directorial vision.

Tierney described The Long Game as evolving from the intoxicating excitement of new romance to confronting the harsh realities of adult life. The protagonists, Shane and Ilya, must confront their fears, insecurities, and the question of whether love can truly overcome all obstacles. He compared the tone to Ingmar Bergman’s Scenes from a Marriage, emphasizing that a “happy ending” is not the conclusion but rather the point where real challenges begin. “That’s when it gets difficult. That’s when tough decisions must be made. That’s when real life can hit you hard,” Tierney concluded.
