Karachi Endures Severe Power and Gas Outages Amid Heavy Rainfall

Karachi is currently grappling with significant power and gas supply disruptions following heavy rainfall that has severely impacted the systems of K-Electric and Sui Southern Gas Company Limited (SSGC). Over 700 feeders of K-Electric have tripped due to persistent rain, while water accumulation in substations is further hampering electricity distribution across the city.

Numerous neighborhoods including Sultanabad, Landhi, Korangi, Saudabad, and Shah Faisal are experiencing prolonged power outages. Additional affected areas encompass Kathore, Gadap, Orangi Town, Manghopir, and SITE Area. Residents in New Karachi, Surjani, Garden, and Korangi are also without electricity, with outages reported in Scheme 33, FB Area, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, and Malir. Sher Shah, Baldia, Ittehad Town, and Moach Goth are similarly facing disruptions amid the ongoing rainfall.

Meanwhile, gas supply has been interrupted in various parts of Karachi since 1 pm, causing further inconvenience. Low gas pressure and outages are impacting households, hotels, and industrial zones throughout the city. The SSGC network is reportedly under strain due to limited gas availability, resulting in widespread supply interruptions alongside the electricity crisis.

In a significant development, the Met Office released rainfall data showing varied precipitation levels across Karachi. Nazimabad recorded the highest rainfall at 69.9mm, followed by Keamari with 56mm and Saadi Town at 48mm. Other notable measurements include Gulistan-e-Johar with 44.2mm, Bahria Town at 43.5mm, and Orangi Town receiving 39.4mm. Gulshan-e-Maymar recorded 36mm, while Jinnah Terminal and Surjani Town each saw 35mm of rain.

Additional rainfall figures include DHA with 33mm, Old Airport at 32.6mm, Shahrah-e-Faisal with 30.4mm, Mauripur at 29mm, North Karachi with 28.8mm, Korangi at 18.2mm, and Gulshan-e-Hadeed recording 17mm. These heavy rains have collectively contributed to the ongoing disruptions in Karachi’s power and gas infrastructure.
