Italy Knocked Out Again by Bosnia in Historic World Cup Qualifiers

Italy’s national football team, four-time World Cup champions, faced a significant setback in the qualifiers after being eliminated by Bosnia and Herzegovina in a dramatic playoff decided by penalties. The match ended 1-1 after extra time, but Bosnia triumphed 4-1 in the shootout, securing their spot at the 2026 World Cup and ending Italy’s hopes once again.

This defeat marks Italy’s failure to qualify for three consecutive World Cups, an unprecedented situation for a nation with such a decorated football history. Their last World Cup victory dates back to 2006, when current manager Gennaro Gattuso was a squad member.

Italy took an early advantage with Moise Kean scoring a precise first-time finish in the 15th minute. However, the momentum shifted before halftime when Alessandro Bastoni was sent off for denying a clear goal-scoring chance, forcing Italy to play the majority of the match with ten men as Bosnia intensified their attacks in front of a passionate home crowd.

As the game progressed, Bosnia gradually gained control and equalized through Haris Tabakovic, who was quickest to react to a loose ball inside the penalty area. The score remained tied through extra time, leading to a tense penalty shootout.

In the shootout, Bosnia maintained composure, successfully converting all four of their penalties. Italy, under mounting pressure, missed twice, allowing Esmir Bajraktarevic to score the decisive penalty. This sparked jubilant celebrations among the fans in Zenica.

Looking ahead, Bosnia will compete in Group B at the 2026 World Cup alongside Canada, Switzerland, and Qatar, marking their first World Cup appearance since 2014. Meanwhile, Italy faces growing concerns over the national team’s trajectory as another qualifying campaign ends in disappointment.

The World Cup qualifiers have produced one of their most stunning upsets yet, and for Italy, this recurring pattern signals a deepening crisis rather than a mere surprise.
