Israeli Soldier Killed in South Lebanon Amid Rising Conflict

The Israeli military confirmed on Sunday the death of a soldier during combat operations in southern Lebanon. Sergeant Moshe Yitzchak Hacohen Katz, 22, from New Haven, Connecticut, serving in the 890th Battalion of the Paratroopers Brigade, was killed in action, the military announced.

This marks the fifth Israeli soldier killed since hostilities intensified in south Lebanon following Hezbollah’s rocket attacks that began on March 2. These attacks were reportedly launched in retaliation for the assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, two days prior.

In a significant development, Israel escalated its military campaign in Lebanon starting March 2, responding to Hezbollah’s first attacks in over a year. Despite a ceasefire that had been nominally in place since November 27, 2024, the United Nations documented more than 10,000 Israeli ceasefire breaches during this period, alongside hundreds of Lebanese casualties.

Following Hezbollah’s retaliation, Israel intensified its strikes in southern Lebanon and declared plans to occupy the region. Forced evacuations were ordered for parts of southern Lebanon, the southern suburbs of Beirut, and several villages in the eastern Bekaa Valley. This has triggered a large-scale displacement crisis, with the Lebanese government estimating at least 1.2 million people displaced.

Meanwhile, Israel has announced intentions to establish a security zone in southern Lebanon, aiming to control the area while continuing to demolish villages along the southern border. The situation remains highly volatile as the conflict shows no signs of abating.
