Russia to Suspend Gasoline Exports from April Amid Rising Domestic Prices

The Russian government has announced a sweeping ban on gasoline exports set to begin on April 1, aiming to stabilize the country’s increasingly volatile domestic fuel market. This export suspension is planned to last until July 31, reflecting Moscow’s urgent response to rising fuel prices and supply challenges.

This significant policy shift comes as Russia grapples with escalating pressure to secure adequate fuel supplies for its agricultural sector during the critical spring sowing period. Ensuring affordable and accessible gasoline is vital for farming operations, which depend heavily on fuel for machinery and transportation.

The export halt is largely a defensive strategy designed to mitigate the risk of domestic shortages following a series of technical failures and drone attacks targeting key oil refineries across Russia. These disruptions have strained refinery output, exacerbating supply concerns and driving up prices at the pump.

By curbing gasoline exports to international markets, the Kremlin hopes to ease inflationary pressures on fuel costs within Russia, where rising prices have become a politically sensitive issue. Although the ban will apply to most foreign buyers, exemptions are anticipated for countries within the Eurasian Economic Union and select nations with existing intergovernmental supply agreements, allowing some continued trade under specific conditions.
