France Leads Video Conference with 35 Nations on Reopening Strait of Hormuz

French government officials convened a video conference on Thursday as part of a multinational initiative aimed at restoring maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. The Defence Ministry emphasized that this effort is strictly defensive and operates independently from ongoing military activities in the region.

the ministry, the objective of the initiative is to facilitate the resumption of shipping through the Strait once hostilities have ended. Although the specific countries involved were not disclosed, the meeting highlights France’s ambition to play a pivotal role in securing one of the world’s most strategically significant maritime corridors, essential for global energy supplies.

The Strait of Hormuz connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea, serving as a crucial chokepoint. It handles approximately 20 to 21 million barrels of oil daily, accounting for 20 to 25 percent of the world’s seaborne oil trade. Major oil exporters such as Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Kuwait, the UAE, and Iran rely on this route. Additionally, the strait is a key conduit for liquefied natural gas shipments from Qatar and other Gulf states. Any disruption in this passage can swiftly influence global oil prices, impacting major importers including China, India, Japan, and South Korea. Beyond energy, the strait supports trillions of dollars in regional and global commerce annually.

Meanwhile, Turkish officials have been actively engaged in high-level diplomatic efforts to stabilize the Middle East amid fears of broader regional conflict. Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has led this shuttle diplomacy, visiting Riyadh, Abu Dhabi, and Doha to coordinate strategies aimed at de-escalation.

In a related development, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has expressed his government’s commitment to facilitating a peace agreement between the United States and Iran. However, Iran has set forth stringent conditions for negotiations, including demands related to compensations for losses suffered during recent US-Israel joint strikes that resulted in the deaths of several key Iranian officers.

These ongoing diplomatic efforts underscore the complex geopolitical dynamics surrounding the Strait of Hormuz and the broader Middle East region.
