TSA Alerts Travelers as Delays Persist at Atlanta Airport Amid Staffing Shortages

Passengers at Atlanta International Airport are facing unpredictable and prolonged wait times due to staffing shortages impacting TSA security lines. Many travelers report significant disruptions in the TSA flight schedule, with some arriving near midnight only to encounter hours-long delays caused by bag checks and security clearance procedures.

In response to these delays, an increasing number of passengers are opting for the biometric identity service CLEAR, which bypasses traditional TSA ID checks and is available at approximately 60 airports nationwide.

One traveler described the experience at Atlanta as “horrible,” highlighting the lack of clear information and the presence of large crowds, including families and individuals using wheelchairs. Meanwhile, wait times at most Florida airports remain comparatively shorter than those seen across other U.S. locations.

The staffing crisis stems from nearly 450 TSA employees resigning during a partial government shutdown in mid-February. Those TSA officials still working have not received pay since the shutdown began.

On Thursday morning, security lines at Atlanta fluctuated, with standard lanes occasionally easing while TSA PreCheck lines extended outside the terminal. Some airports have altered their communication strategies by suspending real-time wait-time updates on their websites, instead posting general warnings about potential long lines.

Notably, the TSA’s Screening Partnership Program, which employs private contractors for security screening at three Florida airports, remains unaffected by the government shutdown, as these workers continue operating without interruption.
