Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Murad Saeed has been officially disqualified from his Senate seat under Article 63(1)(h) of the Constitution, as confirmed by the Election Commission of Pakistan. This constitutional provision specifies the grounds on which lawmakers can be disqualified.
Following the decision, a formal notification was issued, effectively removing Saeed from his position in the upper house of parliament. However, the detailed reasons behind the disqualification have not yet been made public.
Murad Saeed previously served as the Federal Minister for Communications and Federal Minister for Postal Services during PTI’s government from late 2018 until early 2022. Notably, he was elected to the Senate from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in 2025 but had not taken his oath as he was reportedly in hiding.
In a significant development, Saeed resigned from his Senate seat and urged PTI lawmakers to resign from all assemblies as a protest against what he described as an illegitimate political system. He criticized the parliament as a mere “rubber stamp” that undermines the public mandate and accused it of facilitating unconstitutional forces.
His resignation comes amid escalating political tensions, including protests by PTI supporters concerning the health of the party’s jailed founder, Imran Khan. The government has announced plans to transfer Khan to a hospital for medical treatment, but PTI has rejected this move, demanding family consent and the presence of Khan’s personal doctors. The party has warned against any unilateral decisions regarding his care, further intensifying the standoff between the government and the opposition.
