Punjab Sets April 1 Reopening Date for Schools After Holiday Break

Punjab’s Education Minister, Rana Sikandar Hayat, has officially declared that all educational institutions across the province, including schools, colleges, and universities, will resume in-person classes starting April 1. This announcement confirms that the current holiday period will last until March 31, putting an end to speculation about any further extensions.

The minister addressed widespread rumors suggesting a prolonged closure, emphasizing that such claims are unfounded and urging parents and students to disregard misinformation circulating on social media. This clarification comes after the temporary shutdown was initially imposed on March 9, following directives from Maryam Nawaz, in response to the economic challenges triggered by soaring fuel prices.

The decision to close schools temporarily was closely linked to the broader impact of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, which has disrupted global fuel supplies, particularly through the strategic Strait of Hormuz. These disruptions have led to significant increases in petroleum prices, affecting Pakistan’s economy and prompting precautionary measures in various sectors, including education.

During the closure period, educational institutions adapted by continuing online classes to minimize academic disruption. Furthermore, scheduled examinations proceeded as planned, ensuring that students’ academic progress was maintained despite the temporary halt in physical attendance. This approach reflects the government’s efforts to balance economic realities with the need to sustain educational activities.
