Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has called on government officials to develop a detailed and strategic plan aimed at exporting Pakistan’s surplus food products to Gulf countries. This directive came during a high-level meeting held on Sunday in Lahore, where the prime minister emphasized the importance of balancing export ambitions with the need to fully satisfy the country’s domestic food requirements. The meeting focused on reviewing Pakistan’s current food security status and exploring opportunities to expand exports in light of evolving geopolitical and economic conditions in the Middle East.
In the context of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, the prime minister underscored the necessity of closely monitoring the supply and demand dynamics within Pakistan. He stressed that while there is a significant opportunity to increase exports, especially to Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, it is critical that the nation’s own food security remains uncompromised. This cautious yet proactive approach reflects the government’s commitment to safeguarding the interests of Pakistani consumers while tapping into lucrative regional markets.
Highlighting the disruptions caused by global supply chain challenges, PM Shehbaz pointed out that these disturbances have created a favorable environment for Pakistani agricultural and food products to gain a stronger foothold in Gulf markets. He urged all stakeholders involved in the export process to maintain stringent quality standards to meet the expectations of these brotherly nations. The prime minister also directed the Pakistan National Shipping Corporation to enhance logistical support and ensure smooth maritime transportation of goods, recognizing the critical role of efficient shipping routes in boosting exports.
During the meeting, officials presented a comprehensive briefing on the current stock levels and production capacity of essential food commodities across Pakistan. It was confirmed that the country holds ample reserves, with no immediate shortages of staple items. Furthermore, the discussion highlighted the vast export potential of Pakistan’s agricultural sector, which encompasses a wide range of products including crops, meat, poultry, dairy, and seafood. These sectors collectively offer promising avenues for increasing foreign exchange earnings through expanded trade relations with Gulf countries.
To ensure continuous oversight and timely response to market developments, the prime minister instructed the establishment of a dedicated committee tasked with daily monitoring of the food supply situation. Additionally, he called upon Pakistani ambassadors and trade representatives stationed in Gulf nations to adopt a proactive stance in promoting Pakistani exports and facilitating trade partnerships. This comprehensive approach aims to capitalize on emerging opportunities while maintaining a stable and secure food supply for the domestic population.
